PANGKALAN BUN – PT Korintiga Hutani (KTH) and consultant in charge PT Sarana Foresta Indonesia (PT Safrindo) gathered stakeholders for input on a high conservation value forest (HCVF) assessment that both sides carried out on May 13-17.
The public consultation happened Monday (5/20) at KTH’s sports center as part of a Sustainable Forest Management certification. Sustainable Forest Management certification is a process helping natural resources companies follow the principles and requirements of Indonesian Forestry Certification Cooperation (IFCC), FSC, and Sustainable Production Forest Management (PHPL).
KTH’s goal with the session was to share findings of high conservation values in its protected forest areas, KTH representative Endro said in his greetings.
The timber plantation firm also welcomed suggestions.
At the event, Endro thanked the head of Pangkalan Bun’s Natural Resources Conservation Division’s Second Section of Area Conservation (BKSDA SKW II), community figures, village leaders, Antakusuma University reps, and the rest of the audience, especially Lamandau natives.
“We look forward to your feedback, and hope this activity [public consultation] can help preserve conservation areas on our site.”
PT Saforindo’s chief consultant, Suryo Suhono, said this session concerned sustainable forest management.
KTH has quite the initiative to focus on natural forest sustainability, he added.
“What we’ve shown earlier is KTH’s protected forest, spread over 18,000 hectares out of a 94,000 hectare site. Our findings have identified the area as a habitat for endemic species and a water source option for local communities,” Suhono explained.
Following the assessment, PT Saforindo will issue recommendations on its maintenance for the longevity of the local flora and fauna population.
“One of our advice would be to create a special corridor for orangutans, so they can roam freely between hills. We have detected this species in three places: Panjang Hill, Harum Hill, and Suayap Hill, that’s a total of 5,000 hectares,” he concluded. (Radar Sampit)
