Orangutans are the world’ largest tree-climbing mammals.

Orangutans once inhabited an ide stretch of Southeast Asia, roaming as far north as southern China and as far south as the Indonesian island of Java. But today Asia’s great ape is confined to just two islands, Borneo and Sumatra. Their dense forest home makes it difficult to determine population size, but the Bornean orangutans are estimated to number around 54,000 individuals.

We have been working on orangutan conservation in partnership with local and international groups, including research institutions, governmental bodies and local communities as following ways.

Conserving orangutan’s habitat	We are working to secure our conservation areas and to make forest landscape connected by corridors.
Collaboration with communities	We work to mitigate negative impacts on habitats and orangutan populations with them. The impact could be reduced through measures such as planting fruit trees, keeping these trees intact, controlling hunting and rescuing orangutans from traders.
Reducing human and orangutan conflicts	We are working with governments and communities to keep orangutans out of agricultural areas and our area development isis as far away from orangutan habitats as possible.

Fires in tropical rainforests alter landscapes and impact the forest’s composition, structure, regeneration and recovery potential. In planted forests, a fire might burn only the forest floor, destroying ground vegetation and young trees, but leaving the larger trees undamaged, because their thick bark protects them. In such circumstances the remaining trees can then regenerate very quickly. However, in dry conditions, where plant debris on the ground provides abundant fuel, the flames are hot enough to reach the forest canopy and then rapidly spread over large areas. In this circumstance, forest fires affect wildlife, health, carbon stocks and emissions and people’s livelihoods.

In order to prevent forest fires from damaging the sustainability of forests, we have developed the forest fire control manual and implemented a strict “Zero Burn Policy” and also have made significant investments to prevent forest fires. Training activities for our staff are carried out regularly to provide knowledge and techniques of firefighting. Because the individuals in the local communities play an important role in preventing forest fires withaquick response to fight fire when it occurs, we actively support the development of village-based fire management programs by providing community training and campaigns. Through these activities, the local communities acquire basic knowledge to be able to prevent forest fires and actively support suppression activities when fires occur.
