CENTRAL KALIMANTAN — To mark the start of its work year and ensure successful operations, PT Korintiga Hutani (KTH) performed doa selamat (mass prayers for safety) and tolak bala (a ritual to ward off misfortunes).
Both ceremonies are part of an observance of local customs and serve as spiritual protection for heavy-duty operators and on-site workers throughout this year’s logging cycle.
The events attended by KTH’s Vice President Director Jongmyung Park, management members, and contractor representatives — along with Demang Village officials, community leaders, and traditional elders — demonstrate strong synergy between the company and local communities (including the North Arut-based Demang) in promoting responsible timber production operations.
“We hope this prayer and ritual make work go smoothly and allow us to serve all our stakeholders long-term,” said Park.
The ceremonies held Wednesday (1/14) at KTH’s operational site in Lamandau Regency, Central Kalimantan were preceded by a Dayak welcoming dance, interfaith prayer, and ikat tongang — a practice symbolizing unity, commitment, and safety. A communal meal ended the day as a sign of camaraderie and gratitude.

“We highly respect PT Korintiga Hutani for its initiative to maintain relations with indigenous communities and [preserve] the local ecosystem. These activities reflect just how much the company is dedicated to ensuring work safety and sustainability,” said Demang Village leader Murni.
Local community leader Sarwin shared this sentiment, adding that prayers and local rituals are central to Demang tradition. They call for protection and a smooth run of activities. “We hope all company activities can run safely and benefit everyone.”
KTH believes success comes not only from technical planning, but also from the balance among profit, people, and the planet. The company hopes both doa selamat and tolak bala usher in a great work year, one that is safe, environmentally and socially responsible, and in line with local cultural values and nature conservation efforts.
